Requirements and traceability¶
The Apollo 11 requirements at four levels, from stakeholder needs down to component-level technical requirements, and the trace that links them: which requirement refines which, and which operation, function or piece of hardware satisfies each one. For systems engineers, requirement owners and reviewers who need to find a requirement, check its coverage, or follow a need down to the hardware.
Requirements tree¶
The four requirement levels, how each level refines the one above, and what kind of architecture element satisfies each level.
Use it to understand how the requirement set is layered and where a given requirement sits in it.
| Level | Requirements | ID range | Refines | Specified for | Satisfied by | Satisfied |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stakeholder need | 22 | SHN-N001 … SHN-N022 | — | — | — (refined by capabilities) | — |
| Mission requirement | 43 | HLR-R001 … HLR-R069 | Capability (57) | Apollo11Mission | Operation | 43 of 43 |

- Below the mission level, 1 of 217 requirements refines more than one parent (FLR-R092); 4 links skip the mission level (functional requirements refining a capability directly, listed in the gap report).
- Each level is satisfied in its own layer: mission requirements by operations, functional requirements by functions, technical requirements by hardware and interfaces.

Traceability matrices¶
One matrix per specification: requirements across, the satisfying elements down; a filled cell is a
satisfy statement (darker: stated twice).Use it to see at a glance what each element is accountable for, and spot requirements no element covers.
Mission requirements × operations
Functional requirements × functions
Technical requirements × hardware and interfaces
- The technical requirements are satisfied most often by
instrumentUnit(17),commandModule(15),lunarModuleAscentStage(11),lunarModuleDescentStage(10),serviceModule(10). - 48 of 48 mission-level satisfy statements name an operation as performed in a mission phase (10 phases); 2 operations are performed in more than one phase and appear once, as one row.
Coverage and gap report¶
For every level, how many requirements have a complete trace (a parent above and a refining or satisfying element below), followed by the defects that break the trace.
Use it to prioritize requirements work: what is unsatisfied, disconnected, or stated twice.
complete: has a parent (needs excepted) and a child; no parent: refines nothing; no child: nothing refines or satisfies it; isolated: neither.

Verification status¶
What the model itself can say about each
satisfy statement: the requirement's require constraints evaluated with the requirement's subject bound to the satisfying element.Use it to see which requirements the model can verify today, and what is missing for the rest.
- 0 statements (0 requirements) satisfy a requirement whose constraint compares an attribute that nothing binds. The threshold is in the model; the design or measured value is not.
- 227 statements satisfy a requirement stated only in prose: it has no
require constraintto evaluate. - Evaluated on their own, the 56 requirement definitions that have a constraint are 56 undetermined.
- So the
satisfyrelationships are allocations (who is responsible), not evidence: no requirement is verified by the model yet. Binding eachactual…attribute to the satisfying element's value would turn them into checks.

One stakeholder need, SHN-N005 Scientific Return, followed down through the capability, mission, functional and technical requirements that refine it, to the hardware that satisfies them.
Use it to show reviewers how a top-level need is carried into the design, and which components it depends on.

The mission shall yield significant scientific data, primarily through the return of lunar samples.
The need is carried by 1 capability, 7 mission, 8 functional and 5 technical requirements; the diagram keeps the paths that end in hardware: commandModule, lunarModuleDescentStage, psa. The operations and functions that satisfy the upper levels are in the concept of operations and the functional architecture; the hardware in the physical architecture.
